Tarrytown is located west of downtown Austin bordered on the north by 35th street, on the south by Lake Austin Boulevard and Lions Municipal Golf Course, on the east by Mopac (Loop 1) and the west by Lake Austin. Tarrytown is an older, well established part of Austin and has long been one of the most popular areas to reside because of it’s character and access to downtown amenities.
Tarrytown is home to grand luxury homes and smaller condo developments and conversions, mostly in the higher price ranges but having some condos available under two hundred thousand dollars. The area has streets lined with grand old oak trees and winding roads, with Exposition Blvd running through the center of the neighborhood from north to south.
The neighborhood is seen as a more progressive community centered around a shopping center that, upon inheriting it several years ago, animal rights activist Jeanne Daniels proclaimed would have no business in the center which could sell meat or leather. This changed the economic landscape substantially for the neighborhood center. The Nu Age Cafe offers an all vegetarian fare compared to the old Holiday House which used to be packed every Sunday serving bacon, eggs, and chicken fried steak.
It is common to see joggers in the area and Tarrytown is adjacent to Lake Austin, so residents can jet over to the famous Hula Hut or Mozart’s Coffee Roasters on the shore of Lake Austin. Tarrytown also is near the Mayfield Preserve, a beautiful flower park with wild peacocks walking around the grounds.
Near Tarrytown is the Austin Museum of Art, formerly known as the Laguna Gloria Art Museum which hosts a variety of art festivals as well as summer classes for the arts.
Tarrytown hosts several churches lining Exposition Boulevard, so it isn’t uncommon for Tarrytown residents to walk to and from church on Sunday.
Known for its natural beauty, ivy and tree lined streets, gracious homes, vegetarian fare, Lake Austin access, Tarrytown is tucked away just near one of the city’s major highways making it home to many of the city’s up and comers and residents well established in the city; connecting Old Austin with the New Austin with seamless grace.
