In the current issue of Natural Home Magazine, their ten favorite eco-friendly, energy-efficient planned communities in the U.S. are featured with Austin’s Mueller community taking the top spot.
Mueller is a former brownfield site which believe it or not, used to house an airport whose last flight took off on May 22, 1999. According to Mueller’s Facebook page, they plan on celebrating the 11th anniversary and are hinting that an airplane will be involved in the festivities.
Mueller is a 700 acre mixed-use community housing over 700 families with an emphasis on affordable housing centered around an urban village environment, with 25% of all residents qualifying as low-income.
Mueller was named the first Texas neighborhood to earn silver certification in the LEED program and throughout the area are 140 acres of hiking and biking trails as well as open green park space.
The area is designed to be transit oriented and sustainable, ultimately housing 10,000 residents and offering 10,000 jobs, and this recognition from Natural Home Magazine will not likely be the last given to this progressively designed neighborhood just north of the downtown Austin area.
If you are looking for a green community in Austin and want to take a tour of any of the Mueller homes that are currently available, feel free to contact me any time.
